What is Love?

An intriguing question, wouldn’t you agree? What is love? This has been on my mind and I thought it would be an excellent topic to cover!

Let me warn you upfront, this isn’t a post about romantic love. Love as one might initially consider it. This is a post about what love truly is. I see shirts these days with words associating themselves with love, but are those words truly representing love?

It is so important to not just read something and believe it. Even this post! Everything outside of the Bible should be weighed by what the Bible says and then determined whether it is true or not.

So where do we begin?

How about with the “love everyone” topic. I’m not sure if it is a brand or just a few misguided shirts, but it keeps popping up and it seems like a good place to start.

These shirts encourage others to love everyone, no matter their gender preference. “Love is Love” the shirt says.

I see this go by on social media and I see it in shops when I am getting my groceries. This strikes me as another effort of the world to warp our words and it frustrates me.

I have a strong foundation and an excellent upbringing, so I know not to believe everything I read. But what about those who don’t have the same upbringing and strong guidance? How do you determine what is love and whether this shirt speaks truth?

As always, I would encourage you to pray and ask God, and then search the Scriptures. They hold the answer to what love is. 1 John 4:7-8.

This shirt frustrates me greatly because it is such a mockery of Scripture. It is such a seeming slap in God’s face. It might as well have a list of horrible criminals such as “murder, thief, adulterer, etc” with the “love is love and love everyone” emphasis at the bottom. This shirt would be just as accurate. Or perhaps even more so.

In the Bible, these crimes that I listed have consequences, yes, but there are stories of people coming back from them. David had Uriah the Hittite murdered. Not only did Jacob steal Esau’s blessing as firstborn, he also lied to his father.

But if you read in the Bible about those who committed despicable acts outside of proper, Biblical gender preference, these people are ordered to be stoned. These people were shown no mercy and no forgiveness. Doesn’t it seem incredibly foolish to cheer and celebrate this perversion?

The world would have us look outside our own good judgment and Christian upbringing to make room for the perverted. But if the world celebrates and encourages, and even throws guilt at Christians for not embracing it, that should be as a flashing sign to us to call it out for the mockery and blasphemy that it is.

When people or the world try to use guilt to manipulate you, you must be especially on your guard to judge what they are representing as Biblical or not. As Christians we must have a strong foundation to lean on and to draw from when the deceiver seeks to confuse.

How do you build this foundation? Are you a lost cause if you didn’t come from a good family? Never. Seek God, read the Bible, and follow God’s Laws. There is no limit to what you will learn from Him and what you might accomplish for Him!

The fact of the matter is that God is Love and He doesn’t love wickedness, nor does He call us to. Be sure to remember this next time the deceiver tries to sugar coat sin. If the world embraces it, be very cautious and use God’s Word to evaluate it.

Until Next Time!

Hope.

  1. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
    1 John 4:7‭-‬12
