Moving In

Over the past few weeks I have been moving! Little by little, load by load, I’ve been moving into my new room and it is beginning to come together. Furniture pieces have been picked, painted (what do you expect – my sister and I own a painted furniture store!) and are now moved in. Things are beginning to come together!

This will be the first time in a long time that I have had my own room so it has been fun to brainstorm and select what I want it to look like! What colors, what style, what furniture, etc. It’s been a lot to think about and such fun to choose! Perhaps you will be moving soon and a game plan would be helpful. Let me share some of my ideas with you! You can read through them and make them your own!

Let’s start with the basics: the furniture. Consider the size of your new room and consider how full or empty you want it to be. Sometimes less is more and other times it can be all about fitting things in. What furniture do you plan to use? Do you already have some or do you need to get some?

Personally, I had a painted chest of drawers and a secretary desk. I decided I wanted a twin bed, but couldn’t find one that looked quite right. We had had one at our shops several months before, but not knowing that we would be moving, I had sold it.

Then one morning while walking around downtown, I spotted a simple (but shapely!) wooden headboard and foot board set through the window of a shop. Unfortunately the shop was rarely open, so I called the lady, eager to see her items. Thankfully, within a few days I had a callback and within a week or two, I had picked up the bed frame!

Along and along, I have added a set of three vintage nesting tables, a plush chair and ottoman, and a large mirror to the mix. Within the last two weeks I realized that I was without a chair for my desk and mentioned it to my sister. We have chairs come through our shop frequently and love to refresh them and recover their seat. While perusing a shop for another project for a customer, I came across a sweet chair and picked it up for my room! (Actually, to be perfectly honest, I asked them to hold the chair for me and sent my sister back for it later in the day!)

The moral of the story is, your furniture might come from anywhere! Keep your eyes open and be willing to change up a piece to reinvent it! Believe me, paint and new knobs on a dull, tired piece can really give it new life! Consider checking yard sales, habitat stores, and goodwill if money is tight.

Color choice might be next on your list. Do you want a mirage of colors or just a pop of your favorite color? Maybe you want to go all neutral. Neutrals can be relaxing and peaceful, while on the other hand a pop of your favorite color can be energizing and delightful!

I (unsurprisingly to my sister who loves color!) went with neutrals. But instead of just going with a single neutral, I have whites, creams, greys, and black. The desk chair, curtains, and bedding is white. The plush chair is cream with grey. The desk is a creamy grey with black hardware. The chest of drawers is a deeper grey and the nesting tables are black. Everything ties in with something and for being neutral the room isn’t boring and colorless!

Decor is another delightful detail to consider! This might include lamps, wall hangings, throw pillows, nic nacs, and more! Perhaps you have a jewelry box or family memento. These make wonderful decor too!

I am still looking for decor for my room. I have a few things I specifically plan on using, but I look forward to finding others.

Furnishing the room has been delightful and a bit challenging! I couldn’t help but imagining having the opportunity to furnish an entire historic home! Someday! Until then I’ll be thoroughly enjoying my lovely new room!

I hope these ideas have helped you to better plan your room! And in case you hadn’t considered it, you can always refresh your current room – no moving necessary!

Until Next Time!

Hope.
