I’m beginning to think that finding your niche in life may well be an ever shifting, lifelong pursuit. For some of us, anyway. Some women seem to know exactly what they want to be, train for it and then spend their life doing it. Others aren’t quite sure and try different things along the way. And then perhaps there is even another group that knows what they want to pursue and have to work their way towards that in life by doing other things that lead there.
Every life and every story is different. Much as we may want or wish for a certain path, God has orchestrated ours particularly for each of us. The sooner we learn to really appreciate and fully step into it, the better! And that is where finding your niche comes in!
Business vs Life
In this stage of the game I find myself reading a lot about business. I own several businesses and I want to make the most of where God has me and represent Him well. One of these efforts includes reading business books. And it strikes me that the best business advice is really good life advice too. Be honest, work hard, stay focused, serve others, communicate well, etc. This correlation between business and life never fails to fascinate me!
As you look to discover what you want to pursue in life, consider where you blossom best in life. Finding your niche involves understanding your strengths that are second nature and stepping into them. This doesn’t mean you don’t work on other areas of your life as well. But when you realize how you work best you have a real opportunity to step into this strength!
For instance, if you’re great with numbers, you could consider areas that use this skill where you can both be a blessing and thoroughly enjoy your work. But on the flipside, if you’re not great with numbers, though this is an important life skill to work on, it’s probably not your best choice to secure a job that depends on it. Doing so will stress you terribly and probably cause some bumps along the way.
Finding your niche is a process, one to be tested and tried. You will find that some things that you thought you were cut out for don’t quite come together like you thought they would. On the other hand, you will also discover strengths you didn’t know you had. Especially when you lean in to where God leads!
Surprising Opportunities
As I mentioned above, finding your niche seems to be straightforward for some, but that has not been the case for me. When I look back over the path my life has taken and try to connect the dots, the best I can do is say I did my best to show up as God led. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that is quite important and our individual duty to follow His lead over all else. It is just interesting to me how my path has varied!
All this to say, when you fully commit to living for God and following His lead, prepare yourself for surprising opportunities! I have found myself in more situations than I ever anticipated being in the middle of. I have often smilingly asked myself – how did I get here?! The answer is ultimately and obviously God, but in each situation I have the opportunity to make the most of it (or not). My challenge to you is to step into each opportunity as if it is a dream come true! Represent Him well and give it your best.
That has quite literally become a little game I play with myself. As situations ebb and flow and I find myself in the next opportunity, instead of fighting it, I step back and imagine how to make the most of it. Rather like romanticizing your life. Instead of just trudging through trying to get to the other side, you embellish it and pause and enjoy it along the way. And doesn’t that honor God better, when we lean into where He leads rather than fight it or rush through it?
Finding Your Niche
It’s interesting, this entire section was sparked by business advice – find your niche and then focus on that. And that has always been a struggle of mine as I have several areas in life that I am involved in. I would prefer to stick with one subject, but honestly focusing on one thing feels very challenging and like I would run out of content very quickly when my days are filled with such variety.
The longer I thought about it, the more I felt unfocused and all over the place. Then I realized, that though I cover a variety of bases, I do have an overlying niche or goal in mind and that is to romanticize the everyday things in life. To make the most of what’s in front of you, to pause and enjoy amidst the busyness. To appreciate the million and one ways I see God’s presence and attention and to challenge you to look for Him too.
One pattern I have noticed in my life is that things seem to change pretty dramatically. Sometimes the change is sought after and other times I’m not always ready for it. But if I can learn to better appreciate where I am, then I can better appreciate where I’m headed next. And I hope I can encourage you to do so also! Finding your niche isn’t about your comfort or security (those things are only found in God), but rather about better leaning into where God is leading so you can serve Him remarkably well.
Until Next Time!
Hope.
