Balance vs Extremes

Balance vs Extremes

The Importance of Balance

Balance is extremely important in life. Our time, resources and energy are limited and we can’t (shouldn’t!) just go, go, go until we fall down. We have to be alert to how we best perform and then rest, refuel, and recharge so that we can give our optimal best!

This applies to so many areas of life! We have to find a balance so that we have the potential to be outstanding in every situation.

So does a happy balance apply to every area of life? Well no, I don’t think so.

The Importance of Extremes

This recently was brought to my attention because of a discussion.

A person was making comments on a political figure. Another person did not agree with those comments. (Who’s surprised? Political conversations are often extreme!)

Another person piped up, encouraging parties to be fence sitters. Why take such an extreme stand? Wouldn’t it be better to be in the middle?

Warning bells went off for me. This third person might as well have used the word “lukewarm”.

Surely you remember the warnings about being lukewarm: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.” – Revelation 3:16

When it comes to beliefs and faith, extremes are vital. I’m not talking radical extremes, but rather that you must be fully committed to serving God – not trying to balance pleasing God and the world. The truth of the matter is, it’s not possible. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” – Matthew 6:24

Balance vs Extremes

Balance is quite eagerly sought after. How does one achieve the perfect balance in life? What should we do more of and what should we cut back on? And these are good things to ponder and work towards! Finding balance is like aiming at a moving target. Don’t expect to find it and be set for the rest of your life. Be willing to keep adjusting and fine-tuning your efforts! Flexibility is key to finding balance in life.

Personally, I want to be sure that I am available to my family when they need me. But I also want to be sure that I do my work remarkably well! I believe God wants me to find a balance between the work He has for me and serving others well. He didn’t call me to do just one of those things. If He had, my circumstances and opportunities would be different!

Each of us has a specific purpose and it is our duty to do it to the best of our ability! As Thomas Jefferson said, In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” I rather think of style as the areas where you find balance and constantly make adjustments, and extremes as the principles where you stand like a rock.

What are your thoughts on balance versus extremes? I’d love it if you’d share below!

Until Next Time!

Hope.
